Tales from the Steppes

2005-07-07

5:10 p.m.

Six and a half hours. Still going. And mostly how I predicted except for the lack of the park police. I am a bit disappointed with this group - they did not even have signs and buttons made up. Most truly organized community groups at least do that. Some even go so far as to get t-shirts made. But you know it's going to be a good day when you find a camera crew in your lobby. Not since the last public hearing about that road that is supposed to go across the county have I seen such a circus.

Last night the SU and I had a disagreement that still disturbs me. In the last several weeks, the SU has moved my clothes from the washer to the dryer and turned it on, thus causing shrinkage. I have repeatedly asked him not to do this. Yet he continues to do so. Now, our house is quite small. At any given time, you can speak loudly and everyone in the house can hear you. So he could ask before moving the clothes to the dryer and have every reason to believe that I will hear him and respond. This does not happen. He did it again last night and I got kind of annoyed, as I am tired of having my work clothes shrunk. The clothes had finished washing less than 15 minutes before he moved them. It is not like they had been in there for days and were in his way. What is the deal here? He opined that since I have asked him to change his behavior several times and he has not, it is MY problem. I am not certain I buy this particular line of argument. It seems foolish and lacking in logic. The entire argument is a stupid one and not really worth messing with but it still bothers me.

Laughing with your lover's tongue

This could be a very ugly day at work. Much of the Planning Board meeting is going to be taken up with accusations by the citizens that staff was in collusion with developers regarding height and setback of buildings in a large development. Staff will argue that the guidelines were set but that the developers did not follow them. We only have 3 enforcement staff for the entire county and they are generally looking at forest conservation issues, not height and setback. The developers will argue that staff knew what they were doing and it was ok with us, therefore there should be no penalties as they thought they were following staff direction.

It will be interesting to see how the PB reacts. The division chief in charge of this aspect, who was a recent hire, has already ordered a full review of all of our relevant procedures. I am not sure how this will affect my job function. The job itself is secure but the way we do things may radically change, as well as our organizational structure. I am fairly certain the Park Police will be present today, to make sure things do not get too out of hand. Think I jest? Fred and Khalid had to have police escort to leave a public meeting one night after the citizens revolted over a development issue.
